Ratan Tata presentó el utilitario en la Auto Expo 2008 en Nueva Delhi.

La automotriz Tata Motors de India presentó este jueves en una exposición en Nueva Delhi el automóvil más barato del mundo, cuyo precio de venta será de US$2.500.

Promocionado como el People's Car (el auto del pueblo), el Tata Nano es un vehículo de cuatro puertas con capacidad para cinco personas que funciona con un motor de 624 cc ubicado en su parte trasera.

Se estima que consume un litro de combustible común por cada 20 kilómetros, aunque se estudia ya una versión diesel así como otra de lujo con aire acondicionado, dirección hidráulica y otros dispositivos electrónicos.


El fabricante, que comenzó construyendo camiones y motocicletas y actualmente es una empresa valuada en US$7.800 millones, producirá inicialmente 250.000 vehículos para el mercado interno.

Sin embargo, espera en el futuro poder exportarlos a América Latina y África.

Revolución




El auto podría traer seguridad y confort a cientos de familias en India.
El corresponsal de la BBC en el sur asiático, Chris Morris, asistió en Nueva Delhi a la Auto Expo 2008, donde el vehículo fue presentado como una revolución en la historia automotriz.

El presidente de la compañía, Ratan Tata, lo calificó de "un hito" para el cual sus ingenieros y diseñadores han estado trabajando incansablemente en los útlimos cuatro años.

"Observé a familias enteras montadas en motocicletas. El padre conducía, su hijo iba de pie frente a él, mientras su esposa iba atrás con un bebé en brazos", dijo Tata en la ceremonia de lanzamiento.

"Esto me llevó a preguntarme si no podíamos concebir un medio de transporte seguro y accesible para que esas familias puedan trasladarse bajo cualquier condición climática", agregó.

Tiempos de cambio




Tata Motors dice que el utilitario pasó las pruebas de emisiones de CO2.
Según indica Chris Morris, de la BBC, esto será posible en el país de más de mil millones de habitantes que vio un considerable crecimiento económico en los últimos años y una clase media que también mejoró su poder adquisitivo.

Pero al mismo tiempo -dice- varios defensores del medio ambiente expresan sus temores de que esta "revolución" pueda tener un impacto negativo en las ya congestionadas y contaminadas ciudades de India.

Si bien los cambios económicos permitieron un florecimiento de la industria automotriz en el país, sólo siete de cada mil personas tienen un automóvil.

El presidente de Tata Motors, la mayor productora de vehículos de la India, salió a defender su producto aduciendo que el Tata Nano pasó exitosamente las pruebas de emisión y es ecológicamente eficiente.

Impacto en la industria

La presentación del utilitario había generado expectativas entre otros fabricantes de automóviles, toda vez que su precio de venta será casi la mitad del más económico que se encuentra ahora en el mercado.

Mientras varias marcas como Volkswagen, Honda y Toyota, ya confesaron que intentarán producir sus propios modelos, en Estados Unidos, el pequeñín "auto del pueblo" podría convertirse en parte de una pesadilla.

En medio de la crisis económica de EE.UU., Tata Motors lo presentará la semana próxima en el Salón Internacional del Automóvil, en Detroit despertando inquietudes en el ferozmente competitivo mercado automovilístico más grande del mundo.

Por de pronto, el gigante Ford anunció una inversión de US$500 millones en India para expandir sus operaciones, al tiempo que sigue reduciendo su tamaño en EE.UU. donde en 2006 registró pérdidas superiores a los US$12.000 millones.

Al mismo tiempo, Ford designó precisamente a Tata Motors como el candidato número uno para venderle las marcas Jaguar y Land Rover, operación con la cual espera poder financiar sus planes de reestructuración y expansión.

No sería el primer caso de una automotriz estadounidense intentando escapar a la crisis de su propio país.

En 2007, por ejemplo, General Motors invirtió cifras multimillonarias para expandir su presencia en China, India y Rusia.
